Non-magnetic Drill Rod

I. Definition and functions

Non magnetic drill rod is a supporting equipment for directional drilling measurement while drilling, which has the functions of reducing external interference with the measurement device, signal transmission, conveying the power medium of the bottom motor of the hole, and transmitting the power of the drilling rig. It is an important component of directional drilling tools in coal mines.

II. Materials and characteristics

Common materials

include high chromium manganese alloy steel, such as 15-15HS Max, and titanium alloys, such as TC4 and TC11. These materials have good non-magnetic and mechanical properties.

Main characteristics

1. Low magnetic permeability: The magnetic permeability is generally ≤ 1.005, which can provide a non-magnetic environment for the measurement system inside the hole, ensuring measurement accuracy.

2. High strength and toughness: Tensile strength ≥ 1035MPa, yield strength ≥ 965MPa, high fracture elongation, able to withstand tensile, compressive, and torsional forces during drilling.

3. Corrosion resistance: Non magnetic drill rods made of titanium alloy and other materials have extremely strong corrosion resistance and can operate in highly corrosive environments with hydrogen sulfide acidity.

4. Lightweight: Taking titanium alloy as an example, its specific gravity is 43% lighter than steel, which can reduce the overall weight of drilling tools and lower the load of drilling operations.

III. Production process

Non magnetic drill rods are usually produced using forging technology, which involves multiple processes such as cutting, heating, forging, heat treatment, and machining to ensure their performance and dimensional accuracy. During the production process, it is necessary to strictly control the chemical composition and heat treatment process parameters to ensure that the non-magnetic and mechanical properties meet the standards.

IV. Specifications and standards

1. Specifications: There are various specifications for the outer diameter, including Φ 73mm, Φ 89mm, and Φ 91mm. The length is usually around 9m, and can be customized according to customer needs.

2. Standards: The production of non-magnetic drill pipes generally follows the American Petroleum Institute (API) standards and relevant domestic standards such as SY/T 5144.

V. Application areas

Non magnetic drill rods are widely used in the extraction of oil, natural gas, coalbed methane, and geological exploration, especially in directional drilling, measurement while drilling, and other operations. They are key components to ensure drilling accuracy and efficiency.
